What We Do
SKC is a free membership program for youth and teens, ages 10-17 years, who primarily reside in the East Waco community or have been recommended to the program by their school principal or counselor. SKC offers 300 youth access to the Doris Miller Family YMCA resources and facilities to nurture the development of healthy habits that will stay with them for the rest of their lives—all in a safe, fun, supervised environment led by caring staff and volunteers.
Who We Serve
Youth who may participate in SKC range from 10-17 years old.
Partnerships
Partners for Strong Kids Card include Waco ISD, La Vega ISD, Rapoport Academy, Restoration Haven, Cen-Tex African American Chamber of Commerce, Rapoport Foundation, Boys and Girls Club, Baylor University, Texas State Technical College, McLennan Community College, NAACP, KWTX, Extraco Banks, and various Churches in the East Waco community.
How We Impact
The SKC program is modeled after the NYC’s YMCA program and has been tailored to create a variety of programs for the SKC participants. The SKC youth are able to earn a YMCA membership by participating in a minimum of 8 SKC eligible program hours per month. The Doris Miller Family YMCA staff tracks SKC participation and attendance throughout the year. The tracking system includes school performance and attendance, participation in community service projects, leadership and self-improvement workshops and seminars, and various other events hosted at the Doris Miller YMCA, at their individual schools, and within the City of Waco.
