Third grade reading level:
Wayne State University analysis of MI School Data public data files
-
- The English Language Arts (ELA) assessment is not a direct assessment of students’ reading proficiency, but rather their proficiency across various English Language Arts skills. There is no statewide reading proficiency measure in Michigan, but ELA provides a close estimate.
- The State of Michigan redacts data when fewer than 10 students fall into a specific category to maintain privacy. In order to better understand overall trends, values for these schools have been estimated based on other publicly available information, and may not always match numbers that are published by the State or other organizations that have access to individual-level data.
- This information includes all students from public schools located in Detroit (Detroit Public Schools Community District as well as charter schools).
Story Behind the Curve
Over 1,100 Detroit third graders are reading at or above grade level as of 2018. This is a small but steady improvement over 952 of Detroit third-graders reading at grade level in 2016. In spite of this improvement, 84% of Detroit third graders are still not reading at grade level. Hope Starts Here is working to fix that.
