Description: This number represents the percent of students in public schools that have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or greater.

Notes: Body Mass Index is measured for all public school children in 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, and 12th grade during every school year.

Children with obesity are at higher risk of having other chronic health conditions and diseases that influence physical health. These include asthma, sleep apnea, bone and joint problems, type 2 diabetes, and risk factors for heart disease.(5-7) Obesity has psychological consequences as well; youth with obesity are bullied and teased more than their normal weight peers and are more likely to suffer from social isolation, depression, and lower self-esteem.(8,9) In the long term, youth with obesity are more likely to have obesity as an adult.(10,11) (from ADE report)
