Story Behind the Curve

Updated March 2019

The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to monitor behaviors that contribute markedly to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth and adults in the United States [1]. As part of this annual survey, middle school and high school students across the country are asked about alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. In 2017, 3% of Chittenden County high schoolers reported using marijuana before age 13. This was statistically significantly lower than the 6% of all Vermont high schoolers. We'd like to see this number continue to decline. To see tobacco and alcohol results, click “Trend Line Comparison” in the top right corner of the graph.
