Story Behind the Curve

Successes: What is Helping?

The CDC Arthritis Grant focuses on raising awareness about Arthritis burden and management by utilizing the Healthy Aging NC website and Facebook page as social media mediums and promotes physical activity, Arthritis-awareness, and/or AAEBI campaigns and materials through resources, reports, webinars, and monthly bulletins. The CDC Arthritis Grant also everages the AAA network to connect with statewide partners and initiatives in order to provide AAEBIs Walk With Ease, Chronic Disease Self-Management Program, Chronic Pain Self-Management Program, Enhance Fitness, and Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention.

Challenges: What is Hurting?

There is interest in AAEBIs, but agency and community capacity to provide them consistently and sustainably is an ongoing challenge. Health care providers are interested in evidence-based programs, but are not always aware of them or how to refer their patients. In 2016, 36.9% people with Arthritis were reporting fair or poor health; in 2017, 38.7%, in 2019 35.1%. This self-reported health measure is affected by a complex array of factors.
