Story Behind the Curve
The percent of adults 18+ who currently smoke tobacco has been decreasing nationally. VT has a higher prevalence of current smokers compared to the US, with 17% compared to 14% in 2017. Smoking prevalence in Windsor county is comparable to state levels, with 19% in Windsor compared to 18.2% in VT in 2016. Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the country and causes a substantial burden of disease, including heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer, among other conditions.
