Story Behind the Curve
This measures the percent of students in grades 9-12 who report using marijuana during the past 30 days. NH and VT are among the states with the highest reported rates of current marijuana use in the country. Marijuana use among high school students in VT has remained flat over the past decade and has increased in recent years to 23.5% in 2017, compared to a national prevalence of 19.8%. Rates in Windsor county are comparable to the state and are higher than VT's 2020 target of 20%. Marijuana use in adolescence may increase risk for a range of adverse health outcomes. Marijuana use affects physical and cognitive function and may increase risk for conditions such as bronchitis, certain cancers, and mental illness. In addition, it has been shown to lead to other forms of substance misuse.
