Story Behind the Curve
The percent of adults 18+ who currently smoke tobacco has been decreasing nationally. NH has a higher prevalence of current smokers compared to the US, with 17% compared to 14% in 2017. The Upper Valley Public Health Region has lower rates than the state of NH, with 9.6% in the Upper Valley compared to 16.4% in NH in 2015. Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the country and causes a substantial burden of disease, including heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer, among other conditions.
