GPRA 9.1:  Percentage of parents/family members that read to their children three or more times per week (Birth to 5 Years Old) or reported they read to themselves three or more times per week (K-8th grade).

Definition: This indicator measures whether (a) parents or family members read to their children at least three times a week, or whether parents encourage their children to read or (b) parents or family members report that they child read to themselves three or more times a week.

Data Profile

0-5 reading data is collected via the early childhood/ kindergarten entry survey administered in Sitka and Juneau at the beginning of each school year.

K-8th grade reading data is collected via the School Climate and Connectedness Survey (SCCS) Family Survey.

STEPS AK does not implement any solutions that are unique to GPRA 9.1. Work impacting literacy can be found in GPRAs 1a and 2.2. In addition, STEPS has included several family engagement strategies and works to link families to learning and has been intentionally building capacity of schools to partner with families and link them to learning including reading (see GPRA 9.2).
