Story Behind the Curve
For the purposes of this indicator, the "percentage of individuals who:
- reside in a census block within a half mile of a park or
- in urban census blocks: reside within one mile of a recreational facility or
- in rural census blocks: reside within three miles of a recreational facility
are considered to have adequate access for opportunities for physical activity."
Measurement Notes: "This is the first national measure created which captures the many places where individuals have the opportunity to participate in physical activity outside of their homes. However, it is not without several limitations."
- This data does not capture all possible locations for physical activity. For example, malls frequently have walking clubs, but are not included as a recreational facility in this data.
- Although an area may contain a park or recreation facility, this data does not address potential barriers for accessing those facilities. For example, an area my have a recreation facility, but factors such as cost or the need to cross a busy street may still be barriers to community members' use of that facility.
