Story Behind the Curve

The risk for chronic hepatitis B infection is directly related to the age at which an individual is infected.  Infants infected from their mothers during birth have upwards of a 90% risk of developing chronic hepatitis B later in life.  Adults infected with hepatitis b have a much lower risk of around 5%. 

The number of cases of chronic hepatitis B cases in Macomb County has been relatively stable in the last 5 years.  

Hepatitis B vaccination has been available since 1981 and routine hepatitis B immunization for all infants in the U.S begin in 1991.
