In January 2019, District 3 EMS responded to 14 opioid overdose incidents. This was an unusual spike, that may be attributed to a "bad batch" of heroin/fentanyl that caused many overdoses in the first week of January. Peaks in incidents are anticipated in the spring and summer months, while dips are anticipated in the fall and winter months. These data mimic 911 call trends reported by other communities in Vermont and across the nation. Data on overdoses and opioid events collected from the University of Vermont Medical Center Emergency Department shows similar seasonal trends. In 2018, nearly 30% of all overdose calls were related to opioids or heroin.
