The federal poverty level is the indicator that determines which assistance programs or aid individuals or families are eligible to receive.  

Poverty and poor health are strongly linked.  Research has consistently shown that persons with higher incomes have a longer life expentency.  Living in poverty is typically associated with  substandard housing, less safe environments, lower performing schools and food insecurity.
