Story Behind the Curve

Opioid-related hospitalizations are defined as any hospital stay involving natural/semisynthetic opioids, methadone, or synthetic opioids by any intent (accidental, intentional, assault, or undetermined intent). Typically opioid-related hospitalizations occur after a person experiences a drug overdose and is admitted to the emergency room.

In Macomb County, the number of opioid-related hospitalizations increased dramatically from 2004 to 2013, peaked in 2013 at 233 hospitalizations, and has been slowly decreasing. Although the number of hospitalizations has been decreasing, the number remains at levels much higher than 10 years ago.
