Indicator Definition
Students in the Springfield Public School District are evaluated with
the Springfield Kindergarten Reading Assessment (KRA) when they begin
school in the fall, again in the middle of the school year, and a third time at the end of the year. The
assessment progresses to include more skills throughout the year in
order to reflect anticipated growth
as a
result of instruction. This indicator measures the percent of
Kindergarten students who score proficient or higher on the Springfield
KRA when they are tested in the Spring, at the end of the school year. It is used to measure whether students' litereacy skills are considered proficient for their grade level at the end of Kindergarten.
Why Is This Important?
The ultimate result that the Reading Success by 4th Grade campaign is trying to achieve is that all children are reading proficiently by the end of 3rd grade. To this end, it is important to benchmark the level of reading and language proficiency students have at the end of each grade leading up to 4th grade since literacy and language skills build upon each other. If a child is behind at the end of Kindergarten or 1st grade, they are already falling behind in what they need to learn in order to be proficient by 4th grade.
