The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is the largest, most comprehensive effort in the nation to assess students at the local level on a regular basis to provide key data on school climate, learning supports and barriers, overall youth development, health, and well-being. The surveys provide a wealth of information to guide school improvement efforts. The CHKS is administered every two years. Currently, a statewide report is published every other odd year (most recent report: 2013-2015) and Butte County reports are published every other even year (most recent report: 2014-2016). Together we can! Healthy Living in Butte County is tracking the number of 9^th grade students who report using cigarettes in the past 30 days. Through tobacco education programs and outreach events, we would hope to see this trend decrease over time.

* E-cigarettes/vaping are increasingly available, often with advertising and flavoring targeting youth. As a result, CHKS added questions regarding e-cigarettes/vaping to their survey in 2015. In Butte County, 9.0% of 9^th graders report using e-cigarettes in the past 30 days, compared with California’s rate of 13.4%. Together we Can! Healthy Living in Butte County will continue to track e-cigarette usage and incorporate this indicator once more data is available.
