Story Behind the Curve

brain

A stroke is a "brain attack” that occurs when blood flow to an area of brain is cut off. When this happens, brain cells are deprived of oxygen and begin to die. When brain cells die during a stroke, abilities controlled by that area of the brain such as memory and muscle control are lost. Strokes can happen to anyone at any time but up to 80% of strokes are preventable. Macomb County continues to have a higher incidence and mortality for stroke compared to the State of Michigan and Healthy People 2020 and more Macomb adults have been informed of having a stroke (4.2%) compared to the State of Michigan (3.4%).

What Works

healthymeal

Risk factors for stroke include lifestyle choices like poor diet, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption. Controllable medical risk factors such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and diabetes also put you at risk for having a stroke. The key to preventing stroke is to identify your personal risk and to reduce your risk through lifestyle changes.

It is also important to learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of a stroke by memorizing FAST: Face, Arms, Speech, Time. Responding quickly to the first sight of stroke can help save lives.

Strategy

The Macomb County Health Department has identified chronic diseases and healthy lifestyles as a priority in the 2017 Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) after reviewing quantitative and qualitative data in the Community Health Assessment (CHA). You can read more about the CHA and the corresponding CHIP on the Community Health Assessment resource page.

In order to reduce risk of stroke, it is important to engage in a healthy lifestyle. We aim to promote healthy lifestyles in the county by reducing the proportion of Macomb County adults who engage in no leisure time physical activity, by reducing the proportion of adults who are considered overweight or obese, and by increasing the consumption of daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables for children, adolescents, and adults in Macomb County.
