Story Behind the Curve

Slow progress in reducing adolescent use of marijuana may be at least partly attributable to several external factors. First, the medicalization of marijuana seems to have reduced perception of risk of harm among this age group. Risk perception is inversely related to use; that is as it decreases, use rates increase. Decriminalization of small amounts of marijuana for adults 21 and over in some states has also reduced the perception of risk of using marijuana. The most impactful factor is likely the legalization of marijuana in several states. Marijuana has been legal in Vermont since July, 1 2018. This trend promotes the perception that marijuana is in the same risk category as alcohol. Fatal motor vehicle accidents involving drivers who were under the influence of marijuana have tripled over a recent 10 year period.

Why Is This Important?

Early and persistent use of marijuana has been associated with chronic bronchitis, increased risks of several cancers, attention and memory impairment, and significant reduction in IQ, as well as increased risk of serious mental illness. There is an association between early marijuana use and subsequent abuse of other illegal drugs and excessive alcohol consumption. Other recent research has demonstrated that marijuana use in adolescence has a negative impact on college degree attainment, adult income, and measures at age 25 of relationship and life satisfaction. In Vermont more adolescents are in treatment for marijuana disorders than any other substance including alcohol.
