Story Behind the Curve

This indicator measures the percentage of adults in the
Chittenden Region who have reported illicit drug use other than marijuana in
the past month. Illicit drugs include cocaine (including crack), heroin,
hallucinogens, inhalants, or prescription-type psychotherapeutics used
non-medically. Data on heroin use is not available at the county/regional level. Statewide, less than 1% of adults (12+)
reported using heroin in the past year. In the Champlain Valley region young
adults (18-25) have higher prevalence than older adults (26+) of illicit drug
use. Click on this indicator to make it full screen, then click the Toggle
Comparison button to compare use of 18 to 25 year olds with 26 years old and
above. The prevalence for 18 to 25 year olds is 10% and 4% for 26 and older.

Why Is This Important?

There is increasing community concern about opiate abuse. Beyond the hardships faced by individuals struggling with addiction, opiate abuse puts an immense strain on families, communities, medical and social service systems, and public safety.
