Story Behind the Curve

In Connecticut, frequent behavioral health related ED visitors account for 16% of all behavioral health ED visits statewide. In addition, 1 in 5 behavioral health ED visitors are homeless compared to 1 in 20 of the general adult medicaid population. Between 2010 and 2014, EDs say a 31% increase in patients with a behavioral health diagnosis. However, from 2012 to 2014, the rate of mental health ED visits declined slightly from 2834.2 to 2787.6. Connecticut efforts to reduce homelessness and create Community Care Teams to enhance coordination of care for individuals with mental disorders may account for this decline. Furthermore, Intensive Case Management and peer interventions were also implemented in late 2014 at five EDs.
