Note: An analysis of year-end reports submitted from all School-Based Health Center contractors was conducted. The questions asked in the year-end report had been revised to be more specific to reduce inconsistency in data reporting, in doing so data provided was more accurate and specific to screening at the time of annual physical exams. 

Please also note that the numbers listed for each year correspond to the school year beginning in that year.  The numbers entered for 2019 are for school year 2019-2020 and the numbers for 2020 correspond to school year 2020-2021.  These are the school years most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

DPH School Based Health Center (SBHC) Contractors - implement services including contract requirements to provide mental health services in DPH funded SBHCs

Connecticut Association of School Based Health Centers -provides technical assistance and organizational support to SBHC contractors

Department of Children and Families, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, State Department of Educaton -collaborate with DPH and SBHC contractors directly and through the SBHC advisory committee to develop protocols and standards for services provision in SBHCs including promotion of access and utilization.

The purpose of this performance measure is to ensure that SBHC students that visit a SBHC clinic for a comprehensive, annual physical exam receive a risk assessment with a mental health component. Mental health counseling is repeatedly identified at the leading reason for visits by students utilizing the School Based Health Center. School Based Health Centers offer high quality mental health care by using an integrated strategy for addressing health and mental health issues. Studies have shown that the barriers experienced in traditional mental health settings (stigma, non-compliance, inadequate access) are overcome in school-based settings. Students served by a School Based Health Center have fewer discipline problems, course failures, and school absences .

DPH works with contractors to integrate the practice of conducting a mental health assessment during a physical at the time of an annual physical at the School Based Health Center.
