Story Behind the Curve

In 2017, the Governor signed an executive order for Maryland schools to begin after Labor Day.  This order added one additional week to our students' summer break.  The Summer Meals/Mobile Meals program extended the program from seven weeks to eight weeks.  The program also expanded their marketing campaign cby distributing summer meal postcards to all students attending Charles County Public Schools.  Additionally, Title 1 conducted a Jump Start to kindergarten Program which was a free summer preparation program for all children entering Kindergarten at the seven Title 1 schools.  Students attending the program received free summer meals.  These Factors contributed to 5,578 increase in summer meals served from the prior summer of 2016.  In 2017, Summer Meals were served at four hot meal sites, 11 mobile sites, and seven non-advertised sites.

In 2018, the funding for the Title 1 jump Start to kindergarten program was cut.  This significantly impacted the Summer Meals counts.  The program also eliminated two mobile sites with low participation counts from the prior summer.  The program added three new sites: Catholic Cahrities St. Sebastian Townhomes, The Arnold House, and The Metropolitan United Methodist Church.  These organizations had existing clientele with children eligible for free school meals and requested summer meals services at their sites.  Unfortunately, the participation rates at St. Sebastian Townhomes and the Arnold House were very low.  Both of these sites are located near a hot meal school site with hisorically high participation counts.  In order to accomodate these two sites on the mobile meals route, the program adjusted the meal service time of pre-existing school site from 11:30a.m.-1:00p.m.  The meal counts dropped significantly at Eva Turner Elementary School due to the later meal time.  Last year, the Summer Meals/Mobile Meals served 20,921 meals at four hot meal sites, 12 mobile sites, and seven non-advertised sites.  The combination of the factors discussed contributed to the 4,282 decrease in the number of meals served compared to the prior summer of 2017.
