Story Behind the Curve
For FY23 (July 2022-June 2023), the number of incarcerated individuals showed a modest increase, with an average of 1,339.5 incarcerated individuals per month. This is a 2.7% increase in the average number of individuals per month compared to FY22. The increase in the total incarcerated population is driven largely by the increase in individuals detained pre-trial. There has also been a slight increase in the number of individuals incarcerated and serving a sentence. VT DOC has seen a steady increase in the number of sentencing mittimuses received as courts have worked to reduce their backlog.
There are six in-state facilities and one out-of-state facility (Mississippi). For more information on these separately, please see the In-state and Out-of-State Average Monthly Incarcerated Population Performance Measures.
