Story Behind the Curve
This measure is important because it allows the Department to view any upward or downward trends in our turnover rates.
Turnover is calculated by the actual number of separations divided by the average number of employees for the fiscal year. The five-year average for DVHA’s turnover rate is 10.1%.
We do anticipate that our turnover rate will increase in State Fiscal Year 2022. Turnover decreased during the pandemic, and, consistent with the rest of state Government, we saw an increase in separations in SFY22.

Strategy
The department has a strong focus on employee engagement and retention. Some of these efforts are spearheaded by the Culture Committee whose mission is to support and enhance workplace culture through a focus on employee recognition, professional development, and workplace initiatives so that all employees feel supported, included, and valued. Examples of this work include: reward and recognition, merit awards, training and development, stay interviews, and improving the quality of annual evaluations and employee development plans. One of the biggest workforce issues is centered on the ability to telework. This continues to be an important issue for staff and one that DVHA leadership supports. We believe that a hybrid work environment promotes autonomy and allows for increased flexibility and greater work/life balance for our staff. All of these efforts can help the department maintain a low turnover rate.
