Story Behind the Curve

To reach our target, an additional 164 individuals would need to be provided with mental health services each year over the previous year.

The increase from FY18-19 to FY19-20 is a testament to the dedication of our partners. When the coronavirus pandemic arrived, they had to pivot to maintain vital health services. Providers started offering telehealth. (Sidenote: United Way was proud to offer an emergency grant for one partner to purchase "DoxyMe," a safe virtual platform for clinical appointments.) Some providers also continued to offer in-person appointments, adding new sanitizing, mask-wearing, and social-distancing guidelines to keep clients and staff safe. We are grateful for our partners' steadfast work to provide mental health services during this time of social isolation and disrupted routines, leading to increased anxiety, depression, substance use, etc.

In FY20-21, our partners reported a significant decrease in numbers served as compared to the previous two years. One reason for this decrease had to do with a change in client management systems at one of our largest partners, YSS: This has improved YSS' ability to pull data by program and county (a win!), but also resulted in a discharge of inactive clients that were previously counted in program totals. Given that mental health is a top priority for United Way of Story County, we are monitoring this metric closely. We are happy to report that we can indeed see a significant positive impact of our invesments in mental health in other metrics. For example, in FY20-21, 216 individuals (93% of those surveyed) said they had improved access to social or emotional supports due to our partners' programs. This is no small matter in an era of increased social isolation and anxiety.

**Please note that data reported on the ASSET ABF-5 was used in cases of discrepancies with ClearImpact Scorecard. Please note also that Eyerly Ball was not included as they are not currently funded by UWSC and only report very partial data. Finally, please note that YSS’ Service Coordination was not counted as this is a brand-new funded service for FY20-21, thus no data has been reported to date.
