Story Behind the Curve
About 10% of adults in NH had an unmet health care need because of cost during the preceding 12 months in 2017, decreasing from 12% in 2013. Age-adjusted rates of unmet care due to cost are lower in NH and VT compared to the US overall, with 9% in VT and 10% in NH compared to 12.6% in the US in 2017. In the Upper Valley public health region of NH, 5.8% of adults reported going without care because of cost in 2015, lower than the state levels. Adults with financial barriers to health care are at increased risk for poor physical and mental health outcomes and premature mortality. Expanding access to health insurance, especially for low-income families, helps to reduce unmet needs for health care.
