Indicator Definition
Average daily attendance represents the annual average percentage of children who attended school each day. This indicator specifically measures that rate for children who were enrolled in Springfield Public School District preschool classrooms.
Why Is This Important?
Countless research studies have now confirmed the positive impact that preschool makes on young children, in helping their young brains develop, building their social, emotional, and academic skills. If children do not show up to their preschool on a regular basis, they are missing the opportunity to maximize that positive impact. As the national campaign called Attendance Works has pointed out, "Too often, attendance in the early years is an afterthought. Instructors don’t always believe they can or should do anything about absences because preschool, and in most states, kindergarten are not mandatory. Likewise, too few parents understand the value of regular attendance in preschool or kindergarten for laying a foundation for their children’s future success." When it comes to taking school seriously and understanding the importance of showing up at school every single day, good habits start early. Encouraging regular daily attendance for all students in preschool programs ensures that they get the most benefit from the program and have positive habits as they enter Kindergarten.
