Indicator Definition
Students in the Springfield Public School District are evaluated with the Springfield Kindergarten Reading Assessment (KRA) when they begin school in the fall, again in the middle and at the end of the year. The assessment progresses to include more skills throughout the year in order to reflect anticipated growth
as a
result of instruction. This indicator measures the percent of Kindergarten students who score proficient or higher on the Springfield KRA when they are tested in the fall. The fall administration of the KRA is designed to measure whether a child is "literacy ready" when they begin the school year.
Why Is This Important?
If students enter Kindergarten with the pre-literacy and language skills that are developmentally appropriate for their age, they will be prepared to build upon those skills and excel in their first years of elementary school and read on or above grade level by the end of 3rd grade. Educators use this data
to inform and differentiate instruction for all students.
