Story Behind the Curve

Fiscal year 2020 started strong, however due to the COVID-19 pandemic referrals were extremely low during the last four months.  Otherwise the increase would have been more significant. 
FY20 Total: The LCT received a total of thirty (30) referrals in fiscal year 2020.  Of the thirty (30) referrals, twenty-one(21) met the criteria and were reviewed at a Local Care Team meeting.  Eleven (11) of the referrals were received from parents, family or caregivers and nineteen (19) were received from service agencies.   In addition to the actual case referrals, fifteen (15) general inquiry calls were received for simple referrals not needing team review and thirty-nine (39) referrals were made to outside agencies for services. 

 

Demographics: Of the thirty (30) referrals received fifteen (15) were males, fourteen (14) were females and one (1) was transgender; two (2) were aged 6-10; ten (10) were aged 11-14; fourteen (14) were aged 15-18; one (1) was 19-24 with a disability and three (3) had unknown ages.  Twenty-three (23) were Caucasian, one (1) was African-American, three (3) were Asian and three (3) were two or more
races, all non-Hispanic
 

In addition to demographic information, we also track the disabilities in which the children’s referrals relate.  The children can have multiple disabilities which factor into the story and affect the outcomes.  Out of the thirty (30) referrals, one (1) had a physical disability*, six (6) had intellectual disabilities**, seven (7) had cognitive disabilities***, thirty (30) had emotional/behavioral disabilities****, and nineteen (19) had psychiatric disabilities*****.

FY19 Total: The LCT received a total of twenty (20) referrals in fiscal year 2019.  Of the twenty (20) referrals, sixteen (16) met the criteria and were reviewed at a Local Care Team meeting.  Six (6) of the referrals were received from parents, family or caregivers and fourteen (14) were received from service agencies.   In addition to the actual case referrals, thirteen (13) general inquiry calls were received for simple referrals not needing team review and twenty-seven (27) referrals were made to outside agencies for services. 

 

Demographics: Of the twenty (20) referrals received twelve (12) were males and eight (8) were females; three (3) were aged 6-10; eight (8) were aged 11-14 and nine (9) were aged 15-18; sixteen (16) were Caucasian and four (4) were two or more races and all twenty (20) were non-Hispanic.

*Physical disabilities are limitations on a person's physical functioning, mobility, dexterity, or stamina. Other physical disabilities include impairments which limit other facets of daily living, such as respiratory disorders, blindness, epilepsy, and sleep disorders.

**Intellectual disabilities include problems with general mental abilities that affect functioning in two areas: intellectual functioning (such as learning, problem solving, and judgment) and adaptive functioning (activities of daily life such as communication and independent living).

***Cognitive disabilities are a general learning disability. Clinical diagnoses of cognitive disabilities include Autism, Down Syndrome, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and even Dementia. Less severe cognitive disabilities include Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Dyslexia (difficulty reading), Dyscalculia (difficulty with math), and learning disabilities in general.

****Emotional or behavioral disabilities include disabilities that impact a person's ability to effectively recognize, interpret, control, and express fundamental emotions.

*****Psychiatric disabilities are behavioral or mental patterns that cause significant distress or impairment of personal functioning. Psychiatric disabilities cover a wide range of conditions including eating disorders, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Anxiety disorders, Depression, and other psychiatric conditions.
