Story Behind the Curve
The model of customized employment is much more complex and requires authentic buy in from the youth and their supports (i.e. family). Some youth who are referred are not able or willing to make the time committment required, or have taken several weeks to fully engage in the process. In a more traditional model, youth were taken to multiple places of employment in hopes of securing some work, with minimal regard to their own natural talents and skills.

What Works
Fidelity to the model of customized employment is important. If the employment manager begins to fall back on the more traditional method of job placement, youth tend to disengage from the discovery process.

Data Discussion
75% of youth with disabilities who were referred participated in the customized employment model in FY 18. This model is much more time intensive, but also allows for youth to find their natural skills and talents, as well as to utilize their natural support both in their families and their communities.
