Notes on Methodology

Data is updated as it becomes available and timing may vary by data source. For more information about this indicator, click here.

This indicator is age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population. Source is VT Uniform Hospital Discharge Dataset. Data includes all Vermont residents, including those seen in hospitals out of state. As a result of incorporating out of state data, there may be a delay that would affect the ability to perform final calculations for more recent years.

Why Is This Important?

This measure, coupled with Vermont’s numbers of actual suicides, will inform our knowledge of population based suicide related behaviors. These data can inform practitioners and public health planners as to how to plan interventions that are designed for both the individual practitioner and also community based prevention.

This indicator is part of Healthy Vermonters 2020 (the State Health Assessment) that documents the health status of Vermonters at the start of the decade and the population health indicators and goals that will guide the work of public health through 2020. Click here for more information.
